It is rodeo season in Houston, TX. A month long festival that features livestock show, competitions and musical acts in front of audiences that rivals performing at the halftime shows in stadiums. The Houston rodeo, was in fact, held in the Astrodome before moving next door to the state of the art football stadium.

One of the most interesting aspects of the rodeo is not the festivities held there. It is the annual gathering of trail riders from all over Texas. Some groups will ride out from 3 weeks away to be in town for the parade before riding back home. Along the way, they would pick up smaller groups, which is how thousands of riders and horses appear downtown during the parade.

It is a lifestyle that is still being practiced, especially among “Black Cowboys”,  and has no signs of going away due to modernization.

We caught up with the trail riders who had been camping at Memorial Park. They are dressed and on their way downtown Houston to the Parade. This annual trek along the Parkway among townhouses is quite impressive, especially while the 5K run is also happening. The colors are surprisingly vibrant.

A new event for me. Festival of Lights by the ocean. 51st Annual Boat Lane Parade at Kemah Boardwalk.

One would think that if you own a $50 million mansion size boat, and you are participating in a Christmas Themed Boat Parade, you would be very inclined to go all out in lights and decoration. Alas, some decided that it was just more fun to show up with no lights or minimal effort decorations.

It was a good thing that the parade attracted more than 100 participants of boats of all sizes, and more than a few decided to really make it worth the poor public’s while.

Special mention to Boat #25 who outshined the even the biggest boats with their lights.

Wedding at a Parade

(Dec 7th, 2013)

It isn’t often that one gets to brag about shooting a wedding as part of a parade. I am not sure how often weddings in parades are done, the latest one being the gay wedding at the Rose Parade. Nevertheless, this one occurred in League City’s 16th Annual Holiday in the Park Grand Night Parade Wedding. The parade organizers sponsored the winning couple a dress fitting session (free dress), bridal photographer session (and wedding photography) and other goodies. While I was not the official photographer, I got to cover the fitting and the parade for the newspaper.

A special note about the weather — It was the coldest on record for the evening.
